Swanton Township has 3 cemeteries within its borders. The oldest is at the corner of Scott Road and Airport Highway, called "Swanton Township Cemetery", and many of the founding residents of our township are buried there. The other two cemeteries are old family plots that are maintained by the Township, but not used for new burials.
Definitions
“Cemetery” means Swanton Township Cemetery.
“Grave” means a Cemetery lot to which Swanton Township transferred rights of interment.
“Interment” means cremation with interment, entombment, or burial of the remains of a deceased person.
“Resident” means a person who lives within the boundaries of Swanton Township at the time of death.
“Non-Resident” means a person who is not a Resident at the time of death.
“Owner” means the owner of the rights of interment, or his or her heirs.
“Monument” means headstone or grave marker.
“Decorations” means fresh or artificial flowers, plants, update-urns, grave blankets, flags.
“Legal Holidays” means holidays designated annually by the Township Trustees.
General Rules & Regulations
- Swanton Township must be contacted prior to committing to the actual burial date and time.
- The Swanton Township Cemetery is open to the public from sunrise to sunset.
- Loitering is prohibited in the Cemetery.
- The speed limit in the Cemetery is 10 MPH.
- Only Human remains may be interred in the Cemetery.
- Swanton township must be given a minimum of seventy-two (72) hours' notice of interment.
- Graves are Transferrable back to Swanton Township for eighty(80) percent of the purchased price.
- All Cemetery services require pre-payment including deed purchases and grave openings.
- You must be a Resident of Swanton Township to become an Owner of a Grave unless extraordinary circumstances are demonstrated.
- All Burial vaults are subject to the approval of the Cemetery Manager/Sexton.
- The Township Trustees reserve the right to change these Rules and Regulations at any time.
Monuments
- Monuments must be made of granite, marble or bronze.
- Only one Monument may be placed on a Grave.
- Every Monument shall be placed on a concrete footer.
- All footers shall be installed under supervision of the Cemetery Manager.
- Single Grave: 40x20 inches; Double Grave: 80x20 inches.
- The base of all Monuments shall be at least 12x12 inches.
- Single Grave Monuments: Max 36"L x 12"W x 48"H.
- Double Grave Monuments: Max 108"L x 12"W x 48"H.
Decorations
- Mowing Season (April 1 - Nov 1) NO decorations allowed on the ground. Any items placed on the ground will be discarded.
- Year-Round Decorations are ALWAYS ALLOWED on the concrete footer or monument.
- Winter Season (After Nov 1) Winter decorations are ALLOWED on the ground.
- * All planting is prohibited. Decorations may be removed when they become wilted, faded, broken or unsightly.
